Cerro Paranal

• Visit ESO’s Very Large Telescope, the world’s most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory. Public visits run Saturdays only and advance registration is required. ↗

Across the desert

• Continue by private vehicle across the desert to San Pedro de Atacama.

Night sky · the chapter’s anchor

• Join the Licanantay ethno-astronomy tour in Ayllu de Coyo, 9 PM to midnight. Ancestral Lickanantay sky-lore is paired with telescope viewing, and includes a complimentary Milky Way portrait. ↗

• Tentative pickup: 9 PM from the hotel in San Pedro — confirm when booking.

Float

• Swim at Lagunas Escondidas de Baltinache — seven turquoise salt pools where you float effortlessly. Remote, quiet and more surreal than the busier alternative.

Rest

• Return to San Pedro and rest before the late-afternoon departure.

Golden hour

• Take the 4 PM sandboarding departure to Valle de la Muerte. Tours run daily at 7:30 AM and 4 PM — the afternoon session reaches the dunes in golden light. Book in town — same day, walk-up activity.

Lagoons

• Stand at Miscanti and Miñiques, high-altitude turquoise lakes held beneath volcanic peaks at 4,100 meters and above — remote, silent and almost lunar in their stillness.

Red stone

• Finish at Piedras Rojas: red cliffs above a turquoise lagoon, with vicuñas moving through a landscape of near-total solitude. This is the day the desert most convincingly plays Mars.

Life

• Then, unexpectedly, flamingos. At Laguna Chaxa, they move through the mineral-rich water of a landscape that seems almost incapable of sustaining life.

The expedition

• Ten to twelve hours with a guide and driver — treated as the journey’s one serious expedition day, with recovery deliberately scheduled around it.

Before sunrise

• Reach El Tatio as steam columns erupt into the freezing dawn at 14,000 feet, arriving at peak steam activity. The geothermal field looks like another planet at first light.

The river

• Stop at Río Blanco / Vado del Putana on the way back — flamingos, vicuñas and breakfast by the river.

Machuca

• Pause in Machuca, a tiny Andean village with a historic adobe church, known for llama empanadas.

Deliberately light afternoon

• No major excursion after the return — recovery from altitude and the wake-up, ahead of tomorrow’s easier day.

Easy morning

• PUKARÁ DE QUITOR — Walk or bike from San Pedro to this self-guided archaeological site, then take the climb to the mirador at your own pace if energy and time allow.

Decompress

• Transfer later to SPACE’s Atacama Lodge, about 6 km south of town. Settle in, eat and rest before the astronomy night.

The astronomy night

• Book the lodge overnight and ask San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations (SPACE) which astronomy experience gives you the deepest access to the telescopes and astronomer as an overnight guest. In particular, ask whether lodge guests have access to a later, smaller session with Alain Maury beyond the standard group tour. ↗

• The goal isn’t simply a tour — it’s time under the Atacama sky with someone who can help you understand what you’re seeing. ↗

SPACE — ask before booking

• Request the current rate for the lodge overnight plus the best available astronomy experience for two. Ask specifically whether overnight guests receive any additional late-night telescope access or smaller session beyond the standard tour, whether the larger-diameter telescopes can be incorporated, and whether any astrophotography or night-sky portrait is available as part of the experience. ↗

Morning at SPACE

• Wake at the lodge after the astronomy experience and take the morning slowly.

South to Elqui

• Travel via Calama and La Serena to the Elqui Valley, then settle into Vicuña.

• This is not a telescope waiting for the future. The survey has begun.

Friday morning

• Visit the newly operational Vera C. Rubin Observatory, where the Legacy Survey of Space and Time is already underway. Official NOIRLab public visit: “Gemini South and Rubin on Cerro Pachón, Chile.” Advance reservation required. ↗

Return to the valley

• Return to the Elqui Valley for a relaxed afternoon and evening.

Follow what you find

• Ask the hotel for local recommendations: markets, small producers, cultural experiences, walks and food. Choose in the moment rather than programming the day in advance.

One intentional table

• SOLAR COOKING RESTAURANT — Delicias del Sol in nearby Villaseca cooks traditional Chilean food with the valley’s most abundant resource: sunlight. For everything else, ask the hotel and discover locally. ↗

Pangue Observatory

• Far from the lights of the valley, Pangue offers an unusually intimate way to experience the southern night sky. Its 25-inch telescope is exceptionally large for a public observing experience, gathering enough light to reveal distant galaxies, nebulae and star clusters.

• This is different from the astronomy experiences earlier in the journey. Lickanantay connects the night sky to ancestral knowledge; SPACE immerses you in the Atacama sky with an astronomer and its collection of telescopes. At Pangue, the experience becomes intensely personal: Tom and Kelly put their own eyes to a 25-inch telescope and look directly into deep space.

The personal experience

• Book the observatory’s direct PROGRAM E — PERSONAL for 1–2 people: a private night centered on the telescope, the astronomer and the sky. ↗

Weather window

• Keep Saturday and Sunday available so the astronomy experience can move with the weather. Transportation can be arranged with the hotel.

Return

• Travel from the Elqui Valley to La Serena, then Santiago and home.
